Costuming Fun

It’s the weekend of New York Comic Con!! I seriously wish I could be there. So in honor of that event I need to post this.

I love costuming. So I almost died of happiness when I discovered cosplay. I love that you can dress up as your favorite fandom characters and it’s not only for Halloween! I went to my very first Comic Cons about a year and a half ago, though I had been wanting to go for a long time before that. Finally, after managing to force someone to come with me I got to go. I was so excited to go and I had tons of fun. For me it lived up to the hype. Comic Cons have so much going on there is something for almost anyone.

I cosplayed during my first Con and I tried my best to make it as authentic as possible. With very little money and practically no artistic talent I cosplayed as Black Widow from the Avengers. This costume choice gave me the opportunity to really utilize my Black Widow inspired jacket from HerUniverse (company that makes fandom clothing for females). I absolutely love that jacket so getting to wear it in my costume made me even happier. Besides the jacket I had to wear a red wig. First wig I’d ever worn and it was a definite reminder on why I keep my hair short. That wig was so uncomfortable and warm. But considering it all and the fact my eyebrows are extremely dark and prominent I think I pulled it off okay.

Black Widow and two other random cosplayers.

Cosplaying that one time solidified my own love for cosplay. I knew it was going to be something I loved to do from that moment on. It wasn’t just some amazing thing someone else did. No, instead it was something I liked to do and wanted (and still want) to get better at. I attempt to go every Comic Con that I can and cosplay as much as possible. I’m probably never going to be good enough to be like one of the professionals (I admire those people’s commitment) but I do enjoy it and you should always enjoy what you do, right?

Supergirl. Blonde is not my color, I know.
Catwoman. My mom is not a good photographer and the whole thing can’t be seen and unfortunately I forgot to have my picture taken properly.

So far I’ve only gone as Black Widow, Supergirl, and Catwoman. That isn’t very many, but like I said I only started doing it a year and a half ago and let’s be honest there isn’t that many Cons around me. But every time I plan on going I try to figure out how to do better. Be more authentic. Right now I’m trying to figure out tricks on how to cover my dark eyebrows.

Now there is a Con coming up soon though so I need to decide on my next costume. I have a huge list of cosplays to do. But for this next Con I’m leaning towards going as Elliot Alderson from Mr. Robot. I’m not sure though as I have never genderbent a costume before (but it’s cheap and I kinda already dress that way). Maybe I will. I still have a couple of weeks to consider it.

Do you like cosplay or at least dressing up for Halloween? What are you going as next? Got any tips you’d like to share?

  1. Great costumes! I’ve not been to Comic Con. but I love fancy dress and maybe take it a little too seriously. When I get invited to parties I go all out! Got to do a job properly!
