Confession of a Girl: Music Friday

I love listening to music. Actually I think everyone does. But for me it’s different because at one point I hated music. It’s weird, but I didn’t like listening to anything when I was younger, because it bothered me. As I grew up and discovered different sounds my love for music grew. I listen to and like any kind of music (except country. Don’t get me started on that!). I think for me I’m drawn to music mostly by the lyrics, or the emotion of the music. And I love a unique voice and interesting musical sounds. My playlist varies dramatically. But lately I have my go to.

Skylar Grey: There is so much to say about her, but I’m not even sure I could give her justice. Her music is like no other style I have ever heard. She some how mixes rock with folk and then with hip hop. I’ve listened to dozens of her interviews and she often talks about how she doesn’t just stick to one sound because her musical background is so varied. She has done collaborations with Eminem, Dr. Dre, Papa Roach, Macklemore, Kasakade. She writes her own music and has written music for so many different artists. (If you like the song Love the Way You Lie By Eminem and Rihanna. Listen to her original version. Yes, she wrote that). She is true to herself. She does as she wants and I think that is beautiful, especially since the music word (actually the whole world) likes to box people in. Her voice is angelic and she never fails to amaze me. I got to see her in concert this past summer (post for another time) and let me tell you, if you want to see someone who doesn’t sound hugely different from the album version then you’ll love her. Anyway she inspires me and I believe she is hugely underrated.

Lana Del Rey: I don’t know how I went so long without discovering this woman. I really found out about her last summer and I thought her music is stunning. She is a storyteller and each song tells a different story. Her style is very retro, which may have been a reason I was drawn to her. Her voice is so soft and she wears white so much I actually think she may be a ghost. Even though her music and lyrics are either disturbed or depressing I find her calming. I hope to see her in concert someday. Since she released her latest album this summer (Lust for Life, great album), she should be touring again soon. Also, my cat really loves her voice.

Lindsey Stirling: I’ve loved her for years. I love how happy she seems. She’s had her struggles and that always helps when I’m especially low. She does inspire me, even though she’s much more perky than I’m comfortable with. This artist is actually a violinist. Sometimes a musician doesn’t have to sing a note to feel the meaning behind the music. Her music has so much meaning and feeling in it. She plays mostly EDM style music. Besides playing EDM violin, she dances while she performs. I’ve been to her concert and it is really nothing I’ve ever seen before. I’m not entirely sure how she has that much energy. She is going to have a Christmas album come out in a month or so, so I’m really excited for that. She’s also currently on Dancing with the Stars.

Katy Perry: I know she’s an odd one out, but I said I like a variety of music. She just happens to be one of my favorites right now. People hate on her for some reason and I still don’t understand. I’ve loved her music for quite a while and I feel her music is better than ever. Have you heard her song Rise? Her words to her songs mean a lot to me as I try to figure out my life. I loved her newest album Witness and I listen to it regularly. She seems like a happy person too and I respect that.

These are the artists I especially love at the moment. I mean I love Lady Gaga, Halsey, Birdy, Britney Spears, Monsters and Men, The Lumineers, Bebe Rexha, Rihanna, Ellie Goulding, Passenger, Metallica, Eminem, Tech n9ne, John Legend, Evanescence, Coldplay, Nirvana, and Imagine Dragons. There are so many others and I wish I could both name everyone else and give you all the reasons I love them all. But I can’t, not in this post at least. This post would be just too long and everyone would get bored.

So who do you love to listen to? I would really love to know. Tell me in the comments.
